Albertis Sydney Harrison, Jr.

Governor of Virginia

Born in 1907 in Brunswick County, Virginia, Albertis Sydney Harrison, Jr. graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1928. He served as the Brunswick County, Virginia, Commonwealth's Attorney. He was then a State Senator for Virginia (1948–1957), Attorney General of Virginia (1959-1961), Governor (1962–1966), and a Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia (1967–1982). As governor, his administration focused on industrial development, technical education, improving highways, and promoting tourism. In 1968, Harrison chaired the Commission on Constitutional Revision that drafted the current Constitution of Virginia. He continued to serve the Supreme Court of Virginia as a Retired Justice until his death in 1995. The courthouse in Harrison's hometown of Lawrenceville, Virginia is named in his honor.
