Senior Judge, Iowa Court of Appeals and Iowa District Court
Dick Schlegel was born March 4, 1922, in Bloomfield, Iowa. A veteran of World War II, he was a fighter pilot in the United States Air Corps (Army Air Force), serving in the European theater and flying combat missions over France and Germany. He graduated in 1950 from the University of Iowa College of Law with a Juris Doctor degree. Judge Schlegel was appointed judge of District Court of Judicial 8A, serving from 1978-82. He was appointed judge of the Iowa Court of Appeals, serving from 1982-94. As an appellate court judge, he attended the University of Virginia and received a master of law in 1992. From 1994-2000, he served as a senior judge for both the Iowa Court of Appeals and Iowa District Court. Schlegel served as chairman of Lawyers Helping Lawyers Committee of the Iowa State Bar Association from its inception in 1976. He received the Iowa State Bar Association’s Award of Merit in 1994 and the President’s Award in 2009.
