COVID-19 Guide to Library Services

A guide to Arthur J. Morris Law Library services during the COVID-19 crisis. This guide will be updated as the situation evolves.

Access and Hours

Physical Space

The Library's physical spaces are open to students and faculty, but our hours will remain shortened:

  • Monday - Thursday: 8am - 8pm
  • Friday: 8am - 5pm
  • Saturday: Noon - 5pm
  • Sunday: Closed

Because the Law Building is currently locked (use your UVA Law swipe card for entry), community members will not be able to visit the Library. We hope to welcome you back soon!

Library Materials and Services

Access to Materials

If your book is located at the Law Library and marked 'On Shelf Now' in Virgo, then you can grab it from our stacks! Make a note of the call number and check where that will be on the map.

Is your book at another UVA library? No problem! Use the 'Request item' button in Virgo and choose 'Law' as your Preferred Pickup Location. Note: you'll need to be logged in to Virgo to make a request.

Not in town?

We know some students are working from a distance due to the pandemic, and we want to get you the library materials you need!

  • For full books from any UVA Library, please email and our staff will contact you about options, like mailing the book to you.
  • For chapters, articles, or pages from any UVA Library book, use the "Request a Scan" button in the Virgo catalog. (Note: If you don't see a "Request a Scan" button, that means your book is available to read on HathiTrust.)

Questions? Send us an email at

If you can't find your items via JournalFinder or the Virgo catalog, then you can request them through Interlibrary Loan.

Reference Desk

The 2nd floor Reference Desk is closed, but our library staff is still here to help you. You can find us at our virtual reference desk by emailing We look forward to hearing from you!

Returning Books

You can return library books to the Law Library book drop (located outside our doors) if you have Law building access. There is also a drive-up book return in the Central Grounds parking garage on Emmet Street. If you are not planning to return to Charlottesville, you can mail books to us. Contact for details.

Archives and Special Collections

Researchers who would like to review materials in Law Special Collections should email requests to Special Collections staff will work with you to provide access to materials if possible.
