Do I need an account?
In order to use the library’s printing devices, you must have a computing ID on the Law School domain and a Printing/Copying Accounting System (CAS) print management account. Law students, faculty and staff are automatically assigned CAS accounts. Students receive a printing allotment which may be replenished online by credit card; faculty and staff are assigned departmental billing codes.
Patrons who are not affiliated with the Law School may create a guest account or use the library’s public computers and printers.
Steps for Creating a Guest Account for Computing, Copying, and Printing:
- Go to one of the library's Public Access Computers (in the First Floor Reading Room) and click on the LawWeb link.
- Click on the link for creating a new account.
- Enter the information in the form. Note that a web-accessible e-mail account is required, as well as a credit card to establish the account ($5 minimum).
- After the account is established you will be e-mailed your password and instructions for using a PIN number. Go to a Login Computer in the WB computer lab and use your new login ID and password to log onto the system. Students also have the option of converting from PIN authentication to ID card authentication. Most of the library's printers have a card swipe device. To activate your ID card, go to the Law-ITC Help Desk (WB399) or the Copy Center.
- Click on LawWeb and scroll down to the Printing and Copying Services Guide for complete information on using the system.

How much does it cost?
Users who have CAS accounts pay 5 cents per page for printing and copying on most printers. The LAWCOLOR printer, however, costs $.10/page (b&w) and $.25/page (color). Users paying cash on the coin operated kiosks are charged 10 cents per page. Scanning is free.
How do I add money to my account balance?
Will my balance roll over to the next semester?
Yes, the money will remain in your account for you to use next semester.
How do I make photocopies?
Copiers are located in the Reserve Room, WBLab, myLab, and in WB248. The printer in WB248 is equipped with a coin-op controller and a separate terminal for PIN logins only (there is no card swipe for ID card authentication). All of the other printers have a touch screen panel for logging in and an ID card swipe.
The touch screen panels (or CAS terminal in WB248) are used to unlock the copier and charge copies to your account. Enter your UVA computing ID and numeric PIN number on the touch screen then press OK. Faculty, staff, and student organizations may also enter their assigned billing codes.
Users must create their own PIN numbers for photocopying; PINs are not automatically generated for you when you get your account. To create your PIN or change an existing PIN fill in the PIN Creation Form. Students who choose to use their ID card instead of a PIN for logging in must first have their ID card activated in WB399.
Where can I scan documents?
Scanning can be done in the WB Lab (1st floor), in the Reserve Room (1st floor), and in myLab (2nd floor). Instructions for using the scanner are posted near each scanner.
Can I print, copy or scan color documents?
There is a printer in the WB Lab labeled “LAWCOLOR” that can be used to print and scan color documents, but it doesn't have photocopying functionality.
Where can I get more detailed information about how to use this equipment?
Are there any coin-operated copiers?
There is a coin-op device in WB248. It accepts both coins and bills.
What's my PIN number?
Users must create their own PIN numbers for photocopying; they are not automatically generated for you when you get your account. To create your PIN or change an existing PIN fill in the PIN Creation Form on LawWeb.
I'm not a law student. Can I use the printers, copiers and scanners?
If you are a member of the faculty or staff, you have been granted rights to charge Law School printing and copying to the appropriate Billing Codes. Otherwise you can either set up a guest account ($5 minimum with credit card) as described above under Do I Need an Account? or you can use the public computers in the library for printing, the coin operated machines for copying. Scanning requires a guest account.
I don't have a laptop but I need to print something from a web site. Can I do this in the library?
There are public computers in the First Floor reading room and near the Second Floor reference desk which will allow you to print even if you don’t have Law School domain account. The printer is located next to the public computer near the reference desk. Printing from a public computer is free but restricted to 3 pages per print request.
Are there any fax machines?
The Courts & Commerce Book Store in Slaughter Hall provides faxing service.
It's not working. Can someone help me?
The printing equipment provides on-screen diagnostics and instructions for locating and clearing paper jams. If you're unable to fix the problem on your own you can ask for assistance at the circulation desk, the reference desk, or at Law-ITC in WB399 (924-7808). For problems with your account balance contact the Business Office in WB326 (924-4738).
