Circulation

Information about borrowing materials from the University of Virginia Law Library.

Circulation

Policies

The circulation department is the first contact point for checking out or renewing materials, getting oriented, receiving assistance searching the online catalog (Virgo), or asking about library policies. The circulation desk is on the left as you enter the first floor of the library, and the department can also be reached by telephone (434-924-3384) or e-mail.

Checking Out and Renewing Books

Most library materials can be checked out by law students or other graduate students for the academic year, and by undergraduates and other borrowers for one month. Unbound journals circulate to all patrons for three days, and reserve materials can be checked out for two hours. Statutes, looseleaf volumes, reports, indexes, and reference materials do not circulate outside the library. Materials are subject to recall, but they can generally be renewed if not requested by another patron. Renewals may be requested online through Virgo (click the 'Sign In' button at the top of the screen, then use the 'Signed In' menu to access 'Checkouts'), as well as in person or by telephone or e-mail.

DVD’s and Videos

The DVD and video collection is available to any student, faculty, or staff member of UVA. The collection is located in the reserve room, adjacent to the circulation desk. In addition to checking items out in person, faculty and staff may also use LEO to request delivery to their home library. The loan period for all DVD's and videos is 7 days, and they can be returned to any library.

Returning Books

Books checked out from any UVA library may be returned to any UVA library. At the law library, they can be returned at the circulation desk or, when the library is closed, in the book drop to the left of the entrance.

Who May Borrow?

Borrowing privileges are extended to UVA students, faculty, staff and alumni; members of the legal profession; faculty of other Virginia colleges and universities; adult residents of Charlottesville and Albemarle County; and members of the Virginia General Assembly.

Recalls

You may enter a recall for an item that is checked out by clicking the “Recall item” link in the Holdings area of the record. Regardless of which library the item is from, you may request “Law Library” delivery. We will notify you by e-mail when it is available for you to pick up. All recalled materials must be returned within eight days of the recall notice. Recall overdue fines accrue at $1.00 a day.

Status Inquiry

You can view your checked out items, recall requests, fines, and other library messages in Virgo. Click the 'Sign In' button at the top of the screen, sign in via Netbadge, then use the 'Signed In' menu to access 'My Information'.

Overdues/Fines

Student fines will be referred to the University Student Financial Services for collection as part of the university's centralized billing system. All fines incurred by non-students can be paid at Clemons Library. Ask about fine forgiveness at the Circulation desk.
