Using the Library

Information about our services, facilities, policies, and procedures that will help you make the most of your UVA Law Library experience.

Study Spaces

The library provides a variety of quiet study spaces. You may find that you like to study in the stately Caplin Reading Room, or in the open and sunny Reference Room. Some students prefer to be tucked away in the stacks or to use one of our 10 standing desks.

Carrels

Available on all three floors of the Law Library, carrels offer privacy, power outlets, and (often) task lighting.

  • Many carrels are open for use on a first come, first served basis. Others are marked as 'reserved'. When the owner is not using the carrel, anyone may study there.
  • Faculty research assistants and L.L.M. students are automatically eligible to reserve a carrel.
  • Visit the Circulation Desk for carrel assignments each semester.

Group Study Rooms

There are nine group study rooms located on the first and second floors of the Law Library. Law students can book rooms in advance.

  • Reservations are recommended. Users with reservations have priority. (If you do not show up within 15 minutes of your reserved time, the room is up for grabs.)
  • To accommodate as many students as possible, reservations are limited to 3 hours per group each day. We reserve the right to cancel excessive bookings.
  • Most study rooms have white boards (ask at the Circulation Desk for marker and eraser replacements), and some have large monitors for sharing your screen.
  • Do not hold rooms with unattended personal items. Items left longer than one hour will be placed in lost and found.
